New Delhi:

The Chief Election Office of Delhi has announced a paid holiday in the national capital on May 25, the day of the Lok Sabha polls.

As per the order, all eligible employees – whether public or private – who are voters in Delhi are entitled to paid leave to exercise their democratic right to vote on polling day.

Voters from neighboring Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan working in Delhi are also entitled to paid leave, the report said.

“In a crucial step to increase voter turnout and participation in the electoral process, Delhi Chief Electoral Officer P Krishnamurthy announced the implementation of the Election Commission of India (ECI) order providing paid leave to employees on NCT polling day Delhi under the RP 1951 Section 135B of the Act,” the statement said.

“Also, voters from neighboring cities in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan working in Delhi will also get paid leave on the day of polling and vice versa.”

By granting paid leave, the Delhi CEO, under the guidance of the ECI, aims to promote unhindered participation of Delhi residents and spread voter awareness, it added.

“Furthermore, employers concerned in public, private or any other institutions are urged to comply with this order and ensure that their employees have the opportunity to participate in the democratic process without any hindrance.

“This is to make it clear that failure to comply with the order is tantamount to fines and penalties as per the regulations,” the statement said.
