Manila:

At least 20 people have died after days of heavy rains in parts of the southern Philippines, the provincial disaster relief agency said on Monday.

Disaster relief agency officials said 13 people died and two were missing in Davao Oro province, while seven people died in neighboring Davao del Norte province.

Data from the national disaster agency showed that the northeast monsoon and a low-pressure trough brought rain to southern Mindanao from January 28 to February 2, causing deadly floods and landslides.

More than 812,000 people were affected, with about 85,000 taking shelter in evacuation centers, the report added.

In mid-January, heavy rains caused floods and landslides in the southern Philippines, killing 18 people.

The archipelago nation of more than 7,600 islands suffers from frequent landslides and floods and is hit by about 20 tropical storms every year.
