Danish royal family criticized for lack of transparency over Easter holiday

The King and Queen of Denmark are currently under intense scrutiny over their intentions during the Easter holidays.

People in Denmark have blasted the royal family for adopting the age-old practice of using a system of flags to inform the public of their whereabouts.

King Frederick and Queen Mary flew to a mystery location with their children to spend the Easter long weekend, leaving Queen Margaret as regent, according to an official statement from the palace.

However, the flags flying at their home in Amalienborg suggested an entirely different scene, suggesting that the king, queen or their son Prince Christian was at home.

danish tabloid BT The claim was actually that Mary was unable to spend the first few days on vacation with her family.

In an interview with the media, public relations consultant Anne Thygeson accused Buckingham Palace of playing a guessing game with Danes.

“Finding out who is the country’s head of state should not be guesswork, puzzles or detective work,” she affirmed.

“It almost sounds like a step before Morse code, runes and homing pigeons – very, very old-fashioned.”

She noted that the media or locals should not come all the way to the palace to try to figure out who is or is not at home by deciphering the meaning behind the flags.

“I really don’t think they had any malicious intent,” Anne explained, “but it seemed unprofessional because maybe you didn’t want to tell them that Mary didn’t come in the first few days when she had to fix something at home.”
