Ahead of the assembly elections, Congress spokesperson Rohan Gupta on Friday resigned from the main membership and all other positions in the party citing “humiliation” and “defamation of character”, giving the Congress party brought frustration.

The Congress party offered Gupta a Lok Sabha ticket from the Ahmedabad east seat, but he withdrew from the race on Monday citing his father’s ill health.

In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Haq, Gupta said, “I hereby resign from all offices and principal membership positions in the Congress Party with immediate effect.” He also posted his resignation on X A copy of the letter.

“I am deeply distressed to say that over the past two years (as many senior party leaders are aware) and now in the face of a personal crisis, the constant shaming and character assassination by a senior leader associated with the party’s communications department has forced me to make this decision. decision,” he said in the letter.

“His actions caused severe mental anguish and stress, forcing me to heartbreakingly quit the party to protect my self-esteem,” he said.

Gupta said he was heartbroken to quit the party, calling the decision “very difficult but necessary to protect” his self-esteem.

“The same leader also harmed the party with his arrogant and rude behavior. Due to his ultra-left ideology, he ensured that the party remained silent on insulting Sanatan Dharma, which hurt me personally and I was forcibly blocked from the opposition in National TV insulted Sanatan Dharma,” he wrote.

Gupta said this has severely damaged the party’s image and the morale of Congress leaders.

“The leadership should not ignore such activities of such leaders which leave a mark of humiliation on the souls of honest workers and leaders and force them to quit the party,” he said.

According to Mr. Gupta, he decided to withdraw his candidature from the Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha seat as his father Rajkumar Gupta was unwilling to withdraw his candidacy from the same party he had contested two decades ago Candidates stand for election in the constituencies they represent.

A Congress spokesperson had earlier told the media that Mr Gupta’s father was firmly opposed to his contesting in the upcoming elections, despite Mr Gupta’s wishes.

His father was not happy with his son’s decision to run and, in an effort to pressure him, even resigned from Congress days before quitting and severed ties with the party he had been associated with for decades.

Gupta said at the time that he even lost consciousness and had to be taken to the intensive care unit, where he refused the injection and asked his son to state in writing that he would not participate in the election.

However, Mr Gupta did not reveal what exactly made his father oppose his candidacy.

Mr Gupta’s father had unsuccessfully contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections as a Congress candidate from the then Ahmedabad seat, which was divided into Ahmedabad East after the 2009 reorganization seat and Ahmedabad West seat.

The Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat will be held in one phase on May 7. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won all 26 seats in the state.
