Comedian Kevin Hart wins Mark Twain Award for American Humor

Kevin Hart, who rose from open mics and comedy clubs in his hometown of Philadelphia to become one of America’s best-known performers, will be honored with a Mark Twain tribute in a gala show Sunday at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts American Humor Awards.

Hart, 44, has honed a signature style that combines his diminutive stature, expressive face and mobile mouth into a successful stand-up act.

In Hollywood, Hart made her acting debut in the 2002 film Paper Soldiers and rose to prominence through a series of scene-stealing cameos in hit films such as 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Hart’s films have grossed more than $4.23 billion at the global box office.

Now in its 25th year, the Mark Twain Awards annually recognize performers who have had a lasting impact on humor and culture. The winner will receive a bronze bust of iconic American author and satirist Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens.

Mark Twain winners are treated to a night of testimonials and video tributes, which often include previous winners. Other comedians who have received lifetime achievement awards include George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett and Dave Chappelle. The Mark Twain Award was revoked in 2019 following sexual assault allegations against 2009 winner Bill Cosby.
