Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Tuesday bid farewell to his Supreme Court colleagues, calling Justice Aniruddha Bose an “outstanding judge” and a classical Bengali “Bhadrolok”.

Justice Bose, who was elevated to the rank of Supreme Court judge on May 24, 2019, will join the National Judicial College, Bhopal, as its director.

CJI Chandrachud, while addressing a farewell ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), said Justice Bose’s contribution to the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court and Jharkhand High Court left an indelible mark on the legal fraternity.

“Judge Aniruddha Bose was a classical Bengali ‘Bhadrolok’ (gentleman). His character was that of a good listener and a true intellectual who never judged openly. He was a greedy readers with an abiding interest in literature, history, politics, linguistics and the impact of theology and philosophy on various cultures and societies around the world over the centuries,” the CJI said.

He added: “Justice Bose was not only an outstanding judge, he was also an outstanding lawyer before he was promoted to the Calcutta High Court in 2004. Before his promotion to the Calcutta High Court, he had experience as an intellectual property lawyer A unique experience of working in the firm. In his speech, Justice Bose said that the Supreme Court was “a microcosm of modern India” and the commonality of thinking of the judges in delivering their verdicts showed this.

“This commonality in the thinking of judges from different parts of the country proves that all Indians are similar. And there is a thought process that is inherent to Indians,” Justice Bose said.

“In terms of the litigation profile, I find that no matter which state a particular lawsuit comes from — the trials and tribulations, the worries and grievances — the problems for all Indians are broadly similar,” he added.

CJI Chandrachud recalled that in 2012, Justice Bose, sitting as the single judge of the Calcutta High Court, allowed a litigant from the United States to appear before a medical negligence case through video conferencing.

Highlighting the contribution of Justice Bose, DY Chandrachud said that during his tenure in the Supreme Court, he was integral in landmark decisions on public interest issues such as data privacy laws, independence of election commissions, animal rights and affirmative action. part.

“It is well known that Aniruddha has a keen interest in legal teaching and we voted unanimously to appoint him as the Director of the National Judicial College, Bhopal. I am confident that he will lead the College to greater heights in the coming years,” the CJI said.

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony, Justice Bose said that as more and more women join the legal profession, the country is on the threshold of developing the most advanced “gender-independent jurisprudence” in the world, marking a significant change.

Justice Bose was born on April 11, 1959. He graduated from St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata and received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Surendranath Law College. After matriculation, Aniruddha Bose started practicing constitutional, civil and intellectual property matters before the Calcutta High Court in 1985.

In January 2004, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court and on August 11, 2018, he was elevated to the post of Chief Judge of the Jharkhand High Court.
