'My mission is to use technology in the courtroom': Chief Justice exclusive

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told New Delhi TV today that he will use technology in judicial work and it is his mission to bring technology to the common man and help people have confidence in the legal system. In an exclusive, all-encompassing interview, Justice Chandrachud also discusses district court issues, reassuring ordinary people about the rule of law, dietary preferences and everything in between.

Justice Chandrachud told New Delhi TV: “I personally believe that it is crucial for all citizens to understand the work done by the courts.” This is because, to some extent, these institutions run on public revenue, he said. The people have the right to know.

“But beyond that, I think once ordinary citizens realize the seriousness of even the smallest of issues … that the court has to rule on, they will develop confidence and confidence in the job that we do as a court and Confidence,” he said.

These could include someone’s pension, unemployment, a case or arson or someone being jailed without parole.

“We take every issue very seriously. It’s one thing for the average citizen to see what’s going on, but it’s very different to know what’s going on when you see something and understand what the courts are doing ‘s,” Justice Chandrachud said.

Another aspect is ensuring that no one is left behind, even in a country like India where there is a technological divide. He said that he has been chairing a project to open E-seva kendras across districts so that common people can avail all these services.

“As of February 29 this year, high courts and district courts across the country have heard 3.09 million cases through video conferencing mode,” he said.

To appease the district courts and resolve their issues, the Supreme Court also promised to intensify dialogue through a pan-India conference.

Referring to a recent meeting attended by over 250 district judges, he said it was a learning experience as district courts were in direct contact with the people.

So, through these, “we begin to understand more about the problems of the stakeholders in our system—litigants, lawyers appearing in court, marginalized groups seeking access to justice, women—when they encounter problems, they What kind of issues are there in a court case,” he added.

He said it was a precursor to a larger conference of more than 1,000 judges.
