Parts of the Chenab River began to dry up as India closed the water flow in Pakistan, closing all the gates of Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam and Salal Dam.
This step comes when India takes many diplomatic steps against Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam attack. India has also handled the Indus Water Treaty. Chenab is also part of the treaty. The Indus River system includes Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlage, whose right to use was divided between India and Pakistan in the 1960 Treaty. Pakistan depends on these river systems to supply irrigation for the majority of their agriculture.
However, to ensure that there is not a significant impact on marine wildlife, as a regular act, water bits are being released from only one gate of Salal and Bali Dam.
Earlier on Monday, local people supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to catch the Indus Water Treaty and regulate the flow of water in Pakistan, despite that there was a significant decline in some parts of water in the Chenb River.
Talking to ANI, one of the locals said that they do not want a single drop of water to the Indian Army and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to supply support to Pakistan.
A local Kalyan Singh said, “Earlier, the Chenab River flowed at a height of 25-30 feet, but now there is barely 1.5-2 feet of water left. This is to hold the Indus Waters Treaty due to PM Modi’s decision … We do not want a single drop of water to stand with Pakistan.
However, in the Akhanur region, due to heavy rains on 2 May, the water level of the chainb increased, urged the police and local administration to vacate the area.
“… The water level of the Chenab River is going to rise soon. All of you are requested to come out of the river …” The police and the local administration announced.
After the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 lives were claimed, most of the tourists, the Government of India, took various measures against Pakistan.
