CBI arrests Shahjahan Sheikh's brother in officer attack case

The CBI on Saturday arrested three people, including the brother of suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, for their alleged involvement in the January 5 attack in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, officials said ) attack on the Enforcement Directorate team.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over three FIRs registered by the West Bengal Police on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

They were arrested today by the CBI after detailed examination and on the basis of technical evidence collected, officials said.

With the completion of these arrests, the number of persons arrested by the CBI in the case has increased to 14.

They said the agency suspected these persons of involvement in the January 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and instigated the crowd to target the team when they went to attack Sheikh’s residence in Sandeshkari, West Bengal.

Sheikh was arrested on February 29 after 55 days on the run, accused of sexual atrocities and land grabbing during violent protests led by women. A man has disappeared after a mob attacked an emergency room team who went to search his home in connection with a suspected rationing scam.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the investigation into the allegations against him. He was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on an order of the Calcutta High Court.

On March 10, the court sent him to CBI custody for four days, which was later extended for eight days till March 22.

The CBI has taken over the investigation into three cases related to the January 5 incident when the ED team was attacked by a mob of around 1,000 people. A former state minister has been arrested in connection with the ration scam case.

Sheikh was arrested by the state police on February 29, a day after the High Court ordered that the CBI, ED or West Bengal police could arrest him.
