Alphie Meleyal, now 60, finally received a card in the post in 1997. BBC Watch North The nearly 27-year delay was highlighted. The card was from her ex-partner’s mother.
The card was sent with a message from Mandy’s mother Eileen after Ms Melyal split from her then-partner Mandy, expressing her sadness at the breakup and her hope that the two young women would continue their friendship.
Ms Melayal was surprised to receive the card, which she had no idea existed after all these years.
she told British Broadcasting Corporation“, “I’m shocked but glad someone is thinking of me.
“At first I thought it was a joke, but when I got the letter I was excited and when I found out who wrote it I was really touched. I’m so happy I received it.”
Jackie Hill, who now lives at the address, admitted she was “shocked” when a 26p stamped envelope unexpectedly landed in her mailbox.
“I didn’t realize it had a 1997 postmark on it until someone pointed it out, so I was shocked,” she said.
“I thought it might be important to her (Alfie) and I’m glad it got through to her successfully.”
A Royal Mail spokesman offered a possible explanation, saying the card was likely to have re-entered the postal system at some point, rather than being lost for nearly 27 years.
“Once the item enters the postal system, it will be delivered to the address on the letter.”
Nearly three decades on, Ms Melial revealed she still keeps in touch with Mandy and sees her at least once a year, so “everything on the cards has come true”.
