On Monday, millions of people will look to the sky together, hoping to put on the appropriate goggles to watch a unique total solar eclipse.

Although California reportedly won’t be witnessing the total eclipse, there’s still plenty to see Los Angeles Times.

When the moon completely obscures the sun’s surface and casts a shadow over a large area of the planet below, the phenomenon is called a total solar eclipse. Skies will become dark and temperatures may drop for those who live in this zone, also known as the path of totality.

If people on the daylight side of the Earth are not within the path of a total solar eclipse, they will witness a partial eclipse, in which the moon partially blocks out part of the sun. Begins visible in Los Angeles at 10:06 AM.

According to the Griffith Observatory, there will be clear and significant sun blockage by 10:39 a.m., peaking at 11:12 a.m. and ending at 12:22 p.m.

“This is an opportunity to see firsthand our place in the universe,” said Paul Robertson, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California, Irvine. “We’re sitting on the surface of this rock that’s tilting through space at 30 kilometers per second, and we’re doing this gravitational dance with these other massive objects.”
