Calcutta High Court allows lawyers to skip lawyer gowns amid heat wave

The Calcutta High Court will start its summer vacation on May 19.

Kolkata:

As the summer heat persists, with daytime temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius in the city, Calcutta High Court lawyers are not allowed to wear advocacy uniforms as directed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam.

The weather department has predicted that heat wave or hot and uncomfortable weather conditions will continue in and around Kolkata for at least five days.

The High Court informed that in view of the ongoing inclement weather and heat wave, the Chief Justice has directed that the defense uniform be exempted till the end of the summer vacation to ease the burden on the lawyers.

“Considering weather conditions, an exemption from wearing attorney’s robes may be granted until the court reopens after the summer vacation on June 10,” the notice said.

The Calcutta High Court will start its summer vacation on May 19.

Uday Shankar Chatterjee, a practicing advocate in the high court, said the chief justice had also allowed such an exemption during the peak summer season last year.
