Hundreds of people were evacuated on Friday after part of a building slated for demolition in Manchester collapsed.
Locals described an “intense earthquake-like feeling” after the building collapsed. Bridge Street in the city center Fell into the River Irwell along with some of the scaffolding.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said they arrived at the scene on Friday afternoon “after a building demolition scaffolding had partially collapsed”.
according to Manchester Evening NewsThe building, Alberton House, was scheduled to be demolished.
A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “A Manchester Central fire engine attended St Mary Parsonage just after 2.50pm today after scaffolding on a building partially collapsed.
“Anyone involved and the crew is not leaving, and is leaving it up to building control.”
The owner of the adjacent building said he had to evacuate 500 people after the incident.
“We had about 500 people go throughout the day, I have several businesses here,” George Jones said. Manchester Evening News,
“We had known about the renovation for some time but were not told that we would have a safety fear or that we would need to evacuate.
“It felt and sounded like an earthquake. People left because they didn’t feel safe. When we went to talk to the workers later, they told us to evacuate the building.
“Scaffolding fell into the river and the building was shaking. I bought this building a few years ago and converted it into a business center. When I went out, it looked like it was all up in smoke.”
