A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha to jail till April 9.

Ms. Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 15 in connection with the liquor policy scam that disrupted the city’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party. It was extended last week so she could see the data extracted from the phone.

However, in a surprise move today, the ED sought only 15 days of judicial custody, which means Ms. Kavitha may now be transferred to Delhi’s Tihar Jail instead of being lodged in the institution’s lock-up.

Meanwhile, Ms. Kavitha sought interim bail citing her minor son’s school examination. As per the directions of the Supreme Court, the bail plea will be heard by the lower court on April 1.

The request was countered by the agency, which wanted to be heard before passing such an order, pointing out that there are strict rules for bail for people charged under money laundering laws.
