Professional boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. said on Monday he is eager to compete in this year’s exhibition fight in India and would not rule out the possibility of his opponent coming from the host country. The 47-year-old former boxing champion compiled a perfect 50-0 record on the professional circuit, including 27 knockouts. “It is possible. I am looking forward to an exhibition fight here in 2024. We are looking for a reliable name as a reliable opponent,” Mayweather told PTI over phone from Mumbai. “I’m pretty sure I’ll find the right opponent. It’s all about taking things to the next level and with all the amazing people here, anything is possible,” he added. When asked if he would accept a challenger from India, Mayweather responded in the affirmative.
“I have a team and they take their time, do their homework and choose the best opponent. We don’t know who the opponent is, maybe he’s from India, America, England, maybe Japan. We just want to put on a show for the people .” The American boxer, who holds 15 major world championship titles, retired in 2017 but has since participated in a number of exhibition bouts.

Before dominating the professional circuit, Mayweather had a successful career in amateur boxing, winning a featherweight bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics and becoming a three-time U.S. Golden Gloves champion.
He advocated for the reinstatement of helmets in men’s amateur boxing, which had been abolished by amateur boxing’s governing body in 2019.
“I would like to see amateur boxers wearing helmets. We need to protect these boxers.
“Without a helmet, you’re going to see a lot of eye cuts, you’re going to see a lot of scar tissue, and by the time these young fighters turn pro, they’re all bruised,” he said.
Mayweather said young boxers were being beaten and bruised without helmets and needed to be protected.
“I really feel like myself and the boxing community need to stand up for what’s right and protect these young fighters. A lot of times when they turn pro there’s a lot of wear and tear without the helmet.
“I’ve had such a great career because I wear a helmet. The helmet really protects the warrior,” he said.
This was his first trip to the country and he visited popular tourist spots such as Siti Vinayak Temple and India Gate.
Mayweather teams up with Jas Mathur of Limitless X. The trip marks the expansion of the Limitless X brand into the Indian market, promising to increase health awareness and spread the message that health is indeed wealth.
“I always preach this. Health is your reality. I’ve talked about this on many occasions. I want people from all over the world to make sure they’re exercising. Sometimes you don’t get all the nutrients and that’s when we step up And go out and give people what they need,” he said.
