A man has admitted stealing a gold toilet worth £4.8 million from Blenheim Palace.

The 18-carat toilet disappeared from the Oxfordshire estate in September 2019, where it had been on display as a work of art titled “America”.

Thames Valley Police previously charged four menThe Crown Prosecution Service said one of them has now pleaded guilty.

James Sheen, 39, of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday to burglary, appropriation or transfer of criminal property and conspiracy to commit the same offence.

Sheen, who appeared via video link from HMP Five Wells, is serving a 17-year sentence for a series of thefts.

His past crimes include stealing a tractor and trophies worth £400,000 from the National Horseracing Museum.

Three other men have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the theft.

Michael Jones, 38, of Oxford, was charged with burglary.

Frederick Sines, also known as Frederick Doe, from Ascot, Berkshire, and Bora Guccuck, 40, from west London, have both been charged with conspiracy to transfer criminal property.
