BJP workers clash with police in Basirhat, Bengal during Sandeshkhali Simmers

In a late-night drama, the political storm over ongoing tensions in Bengal’s Sandeshkari district took a violent turn in another part of the state on Tuesday. Violent clashes broke out between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by state president Sukanta Majumdar, and the West Bengal police after they were prevented from staging a protest.

The clashes broke out after Majumdar and his supporters took a local train to Basirhat (located in the same northern 24 Parganas district) and started marching towards the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Basirhat. Meanwhile, the city imposed a ban in view of rising tensions in Sandeshkari.

Around midnight, the police declared the ‘dharna’ called by the BJP illegal and detained everyone, including Majumdar. According to sources, the BJP leader was taken to Basirhat Stadium and then released on payment of a public relations bond.

Sukanta visits Sandeshkari

Sukanta, who remains in Basirhat, said he will visit Sandeshhalli on Wednesday after the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday stayed the prohibitory order issued in Sandeshhalli under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure . Protests have been taking place in Sandesh Khali since last week. However, sources revealed that the BJP leader will not be allowed to enter the city and is expected to be intercepted at Dharmakali.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) maintained that the situation in Sandeshkhali, which falls under the jurisdiction of Basirhat police station, was calm.

HC revokes Section 144 in Sandeshkhali case

“Grately disturbed” by the incident in West Bengal’s Sandeshkari, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday admitted charges of sexually assaulting women “at gunpoint” and transferring tribal land and directed that notices be issued to the local administration. State authorities.

The Calcutta High Court further stayed the prohibitory order issued in Sandeshkhali under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure over alleged atrocities committed against villagers by some persons due to their allegiance to the ruling Trinamool Congress party.
