Sarvesh Singh, the BJP’s Moradabad candidate and a five-time MLA and former Congress MP, died a day after voting in the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh constituency election. He is 72 years old.

Sarvesh Singh, who has been seriously ill for a long time, is receiving treatment in a Delhi hospital.

“Kunwar Sarvesh Kumar has passed away,” UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary told news agency PTI.

“He had a problem with his throat and underwent surgery. Yesterday, he went to AIIMS for a check-up,” Mr. Chaudhry added.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath termed the leader’s death as an “irreparable loss to the BJP Parivar”.

“I am shocked to learn about the death of our Moradabad candidate and former MP Kunwar Sarvesh Kumar Singhji. This is a huge loss for the BJP Parivar Recovering loss. My condolences and prayers to his family at this sad time. I pray Prabhu Shri Ram to bring eternal peace to the departed soul and also give strength to his family. Moradabad is one of the 80 constituencies in western Uttar Pradesh that was won by ST Hasan of the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The seat consists of five Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) segments: Barhapur; Kantha; Thakudwara; Moradabad Rural; and Moradabad Nagar District.

This time, Ruchi Veera was chosen as the Samajwadi Party candidate by the opposition India Bloc.
