U.S. President Joe Biden will host congressional leaders at the White House on Tuesday as he pushes for billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine and averts an imminent U.S. government shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will participate in the discussion.

The Democratic-led Senate passed a $95 billion bipartisan security bill earlier this month that includes $61 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel and nearly $5 billion to support countries including Taiwan. partners in the Indo-Pacific region and other assistance.

Johnson promised not to bring the bill to the House for a vote, saying the American people wanted lawmakers to focus on domestic issues, including border security, rather than sending aid overseas.

Schumer said on Tuesday that not supporting Ukraine would show allies they cannot rely on the United States.

Leaders face a Friday deadline to agree on funding for some parts of the government, including agriculture, transportation and some veterans services. There is a deadline in a week when funding for other parts of the government is set to expire.
