Democrats, Republicans hold presidential primaries in Michigan

Voters in the US state of Michigan went to the polls on Tuesday in Democratic and Republican presidential primaries, with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump widely expected to win.

Those margins of victory will be closely watched ahead of a potential rematch of the 2020 presidential election won by Biden because they indicate where the two candidates stand in key states.

In Michigan, which has the highest concentration of Arab Americans in the country, some Democrats called on voters to choose “uncommitment” on Tuesday rather than vote for Biden amid opposition to the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza.

Trump has won every state in the battle for the Republican nomination so far, with polls in Michigan showing him with a commanding lead in the state.

But his only remaining primary challenger, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, remains in the race and believes Trump will lose to Biden in the November election.

Haley said she will hold out until at least March 5 in the so-called “Super Tuesday” race, which involves 15 states, two districts and a third of the total Republican delegates.

Republicans will formally nominate their presidential candidate at their convention in July. The Democratic Party will hold its national convention in August.
