Lahore:

A Bengal tiger broke its cage on Sunday while being transferred to a city in Pakistan’s Punjab province, injuring two people, officials said.

Punjab Wildlife Department Director Mudassar Riaz Malik told PTI that Waqas Ahamd, a resident of Multan, purchased the Bengal tiger from Faizi in Lahore.

He said: “While Waqas was moving the big cat from Lahore to Multan on Sunday, it opened its cage near Multan, about 350 kilometers from Lahore, and entered there fields,” he said, adding that the tiger’s owner informed the wildlife department about the incident.

“The department dispatched a team from Multan. After several hours of intense operations, wildlife officials rescued it. The big cat had injured two people before being rescued,” the director general said.

The injured have been shifted to a hospital in Multan and their condition is said to be out of danger, he added.

The owner of the Bengal tiger will be fined for transporting the big cat without notifying the wildlife department, the official said.

He said the tiger was transferred to Multan Zoo.
