A lucky group of black bears got to ride pedal boats after a lake formed inside their enclosure.
After heavy rain created a small lake within the 13-acre reserve, keepers at Woburn Wildlife Park decided to float a swan pedalo on the water.
Tommy Babington, deputy chief of the park’s carnivore section, said bedfordshirethe bears “immediately took an interest in their new neighbors” and “immediately investigated.”
Mr Babington said the pedal boat was normally used elsewhere on the site but new pedals were awaited.
“It’s great fun for visitors to see them climb aboard, and we love designing new ways to provide food, scents and rich habitats to stimulate their natural foraging behaviour,” he said.
“Bears are naturally very curious animals and keepers encourage them by providing a variety of enrichments through their habitat as this keeps their minds and bodies active.
“Swan boat enrichment may be a less traditional way of stimulating their natural behavior, but it’s certainly popular.”
The four black bears are two pairs of siblings – two males and two females – named Harvard, Maple, Colorado and Aspen.
They are native to North America and can grow up to 2m long and weigh over 45 stone.
