India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returned to action in the post-tea session on day four of the third Test against England after he was forced to leave for Chennai to take care of his ailing mother. Ashwin left for Chennai a few hours after taking his 500th Test wicket during England’s first innings. After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Ashwin would rejoin the team on day four, former head coach Ravi Shastri revealed that the board arranged a chartered flight for the player.

Shastri praised the BCCI and secretary Jay Shah for showing sympathy towards Ashwin and said the gesture would make the player feel “special”.

“BCCI Secretary Jay Shah organized a charter to take them home and bring them back. I think BCCI also needs similar sympathy. Indians are the custodians of cricket and with this kind of sympathy, they Will go.” A long, long way. It also makes the players feel that they belong and are special,” Ravi Shastri said during his commentary stint on the fourth day of the Rajkot Test.

Meanwhile, as per ICC playing conditions, Ashwin did not receive any ‘penalty time’ for his absence on the third day.

According to ICC clause 24.3.2, “The absence of a named player will not attract a penalty if, in the opinion of the umpires, the player has left the field for another perfectly acceptable reason, not including illness or internal injury.” Ashwin, who reached Rajkot on Sunday afternoon, was seen practicing during the tea break.

While Ashwin helped India whitewash England by taking the wicket of Tom Hartley with his 501st Test wicket, Ravindra Jadeja won the ‘Man of the Match’ award.

Jadeja scored a century and took two wickets in the first innings, before adding five more wickets to his account in the second innings as India defeated England by a record 434 runs in Rajkot.

Chasing a target of 557 to win in Rajkot, England’s batting collapsed like a pack of cards and were all out for 122 on the fourth day with eight wickets falling in the final session.

Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal decimated the opposition attack by scoring 214 off 236 balls as India declared their second innings at 430-4.
