The big news for Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2024 season was the decision to appoint Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain in place of MS Dhoni. Dhoni ended his long tenure as CSK captain and extended his support to Ruturaj as the new leader of the team. While the move to appoint Hardik Pandya in place of Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain was not well received by the fanbase, CSK fans were happy with Ruturaj’s support of Dhoni. CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan spoke openly about the decision process and praised Ruturaj for leading the team well and making a smooth transition.
“When Ruturaj came to CSK a few years ago and started performing well, we had discussions with the team management, we felt he would be a good choice to captain the team. Both FL (Fleming) and MS (Dhoni) had long discussions with him, they had plans to make him the future captain,” Vishwanathan told CSK in a YouTube video.
“His performances and the way he saw the game, and his thoughts whenever he spoke to MS and Fleming… both of them felt he would be a good captain at CSK. And we were not disappointed. He led the team comfortably. Seniors also helped him. This has not affected the performance of his bat. He continues to be a consistent performer.”
He said, “The pressure of captaincy has had no effect on him. We look forward to his contributions for CSK in the future. The pressure is immense as he is following in the footsteps of MS Dhoni. No one can match him, but MS was confident that Rutu (Gaikwad) has the potential to do a very good job. The approval from the crowd really helped them, that’s for sure. Because if there was crowd pressure, you can imagine what would have happened to other captains,” he said.
Vishwanathan also revealed that the change was helped by the fact that when it comes to CSK the management prefers not to interfere in cricketing matters.
“I think CSK fans accepted what MS Dhoni gave to Ruturaj as captain because he (Dhoni) chose him. The team management chose him as the captain. And as you all know, CSK management has never interfered in cricket matters. So, that also helped Rutu, because he was very clear that the instructions came from the team management. The responsibility of delivering was on him. I am confident that he will perform very well in the future years as well,” concluded the CSK CEO.
