Former Australian cricket team batsman Justin Langer was one of the names who were considered to be the frontrunner to become the next head coach of India. The BCCI was reportedly considering several options to replace Rahul Dravid as his contract will expire after the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, Langer opted out of the race as he said that these types of jobs can be ‘tedious’ and also mentioned the conversation he had with KL Rahul about his move to Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2024. Langer revealed that Rahul had told him that the ‘politics and pressure’ that the head coach of the Indian cricket team faces is almost ‘a thousand times’ more than that of any IPL coach.

“I know it’s an omnipresent role and it’s tiring after doing it for four years with the Australian team,” Langer said during his conversation on BBC Stumped.

“I was talking to KL Rahul and he said, ‘You know, if you think there is pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply it by a thousand, [that’s] Coaching to India. I think that was good advice.”

Earlier, Langer’s former partner Ricky Ponting had also distanced himself from this work to some extent.

“I’ve seen a lot of reports about it,” Ponting told the ICC review. “Normally these things come out before you even know about them on social media, but during the IPL there were some small face-to-face conversations, just to gauge my interest and see if I would do it.”

“I would love to become a senior coach of a national team, but I have other things in my life and I want to spend some time at home…Everyone knows that if you work with the Indian team, you are more likely to work with an IPL team. “Can’t be included in the U.S., so this too will be excluded from it.”

“Also, being a national head coach is a ten or 11-month job a year, and as much as I want to do it, it just doesn’t fit into my lifestyle and the things I really enjoy doing,” ‘ he adds.
