Arrested IIT student tells family he won't study, has other plans: father

The father of an arrested IIT Guwahati student who allegedly pledged allegiance to the terror group ISIS said on Tuesday his son had spoken to his family in Delhi and said he would not continue his studies and had other plans.

The accused Touseef Ali Farouqui, a fourth-year B Tech student in the Department of Biological Sciences, was arrested on March 24 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is currently in police custody.

“I live in Sivan in Bihar but he is in Delhi with my wife. My son told her that he will not continue his studies as he has other plans.” Asmat, the student’s father Ali Farooqui told reporters outside the court that his son had been brought to the court to go through some formalities.

He will appear in court on Wednesday when his police remand expires.

“There’s no question that his mother knew something but hid it from others,” said Farooqui, a senior.

His wife also came to court but did not speak to the media.

The student’s father claimed police did not allow him to talk to his son during the day.

His parents arrived here on Friday and went to the police station where he was staying to pick him up the next day.

His father did not disclose what happened during the meeting.

Faruqui Sr. has denied speculation that he is separated from his wife and said he lives in Bihar and looks after his farmland.

The accused was detained at Hajo in Kamrup district on March 23 and arrested the next day under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and UAPA.
