Jamie Vardy leads Premier League champions Leicester City to the Championship title. football news

Jamie Vardy scored twice as Leicester celebrated their promotion to the Premier League and the Championship title with a 3-0 win at Preston on Monday. The Foxes’ return to the top flight looks set to be confirmed after Leeds suffered a 4-0 defeat at QPR on Friday. Enzo Maresca’s side needed a win at Deepdale to guarantee top spot by beating Ipswich with a game remaining and they did so with ease, thanks largely to their 37-year-old captain. Vardy was one of the heroes of Leicester’s memorable Premier League win in 2016 and was part of the team that also won the club’s first FA Cup three years ago.

He played a central role in another night to delight the traveling fans as he took his goal tally for the season to 20.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game but we got the job done. It’s great to celebrate with the fans,” Vardy said.

“How can you not love scoring a goal? Especially the second one, scoring in front of the fans – you can’t get a better feeling than that.”

Vardy opened the scoring when his mishit effort found the far corner in the 36th minute and then headed into the unguarded net after Wout Fes’s shot came off the post.

Casey McAteer sealed the title party with a header from Abdul Fatavu’s cross 23 minutes from time.

Having retained most of the squad that were surprisingly relegated last season, Leicester were in desperate need of returning to Premier League property at the first attempt, as the club was running into heavy losses.

They were charged by the Premier League in March with alleged breaches of profits and sustainability rules (PSR) relating to their last three years in the top flight.

If found guilty, Leicester could start their life back in the top flight with a points deduction.

The battle for a place in the Premier League next season is set to last until the final day of the Championship season on Saturday.

Leeds are second on goal difference ahead of Ipswich, who have a game in hand at Coventry on Tuesday.

On the final day Ipswich host Huddersfield, who are practically relegated, while Leeds face Southampton at Elland Road.

Only the top two are automatically promoted, while the third to sixth placed teams go to a playoff to determine the third promotion spot.
