Former President Donald Trump has reignited controversy with his latest comments comparing himself to Nelson Mandela. He expressed an unexpected sentiment about his looming legal troubles.

The former president has publicly welcomed the possibility of being jailed for violating a gag order in an upcoming trial in New York.

In a recent article published by The Truth Society, the former president said he would be willing to face jail time for violating a gag order in his upcoming hush money trial in New York. “I would love to be a modern-day Nelson Mandela – it would be a great honor for me,” Trump wrote, taking aim at New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchant, who is overseeing the case.

In the past, he has compared his legal battles to Mandela’s and even to the persecution of Jesus Christ.

Trump criticized Mo Qian, saying he had compromised. He believed there was a conflict of interest due to his daughter’s role at a progressive consulting firm. He has posted repeatedly about the judge’s daughter since the initial gag order was issued in late March. Donald Trump broke out on Saturday with his latest comments about a judge’s daughter.

The trial is scheduled to begin on April 15, when a jury will be selected for the state’s criminal indictment of Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business documents. The charges relate to hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump’s rhetoric remains confrontational, directed not just at the legal system but at Judge Merseyside’s family.

A similar situation occurred last October, when Judge Arthur Engoron fined Trump $10,000 for violating a gag order in a civil case.

The judge later expanded an order barring Trump from making public statements about witnesses, jurors, attorneys, court staff and their families in the case. But Trump continues to push the boundaries of his gag order.
