According to MacRumors, Apple is said to be preparing the iOS 17.3.1 update for all supported iPhones. The update is not expected to bring big feature drops or even introduce minor quality-of-life features; instead, according to the publication, it is expected to be a small update designed to address software bugs and possibly some security loopholes.

It is worth noting that in the past two years, Apple has repeatedly released versions such as iOS 16.3.1 in February 2023 and iOS 15.3.1 in February 2022. This suggests the same could happen this year. However, the publication did not mention when Apple will release the alleged update.

Now that we know users won’t get major features with the iOS 17.3.1 update, it’s worth mentioning that Apple has confirmed that it is working on an iOS 17.4 update, which is expected to launch around March this year.

With it, Apple is expected to make a major overhaul of iOS, including EU-specific changes such as support for third-party app stores that enable sideloading, the ability to choose a default browser, universal features for everyone like new emojis symbols) and even podcast transcripts.

Apple is making these regulatory changes to comply with the EU’s DMA requirements. In iOS 17.4, iPhone users in EU countries will soon have the option to access alternative app stores, instead of relying solely on the App Store to download apps and games. This gives users the option to download apps from anywhere they wish.
