Angela Rayner won’t issue ‘personal tax advice’ on council house sale despite police developments

Angela Rayner said she would not release the “personal tax advice” she received on the sale of her council house, despite a police investigation into her living arrangements.

Labor’s deputy leader told BBC Radio 4’s Today program she was “convinced” she had done “absolutely nothing wrong” over the sale of the council house and whether capital gains tax should be paid.

Ms Rayner said she had been “very clear about the advice I received” but when asked why she did not make the legal advice public she said: “Because it was my personal tax advice. But I was very Happy to comply with requests from the necessary authorities who wish to see this happen.”

She went on to say that while she was willing to hand over information to the police and HMRC, “I will not reveal all personal information about my family over the past 15 years”.

Ms Rayner refused to publish her tax advice after Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was “reevaluating” its initial decision not to investigate allegations about her living arrangements following a complaint.

Labor MPs have Become the center of attention In recent weeks she sold a former council house in Stockport she previously owned and was accused of evading capital gains tax, which she denies.

But Ms Rayner has also faced scrutiny over suggestions that in 2010 she may have lived primarily at her then-husband’s address, although she was registered to vote using her own address, potentially breaking election rules.

But Conservative MP James Daley asked police to investigate whether she gave false information or breached election rules.

However, in a new statement released on Wednesday, a police spokesman said: “We have received a complaint regarding our decision not to investigate the allegation and are reassessing this decision.

“The complainant will be updated on the outcome of the reassessment in due course.”
