Amid Ishan Kishan saga, Sunil Gavaskar suggests BCCI to increase Ranji Trophy fee to ‘double, triple’

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday urged the BCCI to introduce the recently introduced Test incentive system to domestic cricket, saying it would encourage more players to participate and reduce dropouts. The BCCI announced its incentive policy immediately after the five-match Test series against England and also announced the list of players who have been awarded contracts from October 2023 to September 2024. According to the announcement, those players who play 75 matches in India’s home and away Tests can earn up to Rs 60 lakh per match.

“I think what Rahul Dravid said when he made the announcement in Dharamshala,” Gavaskar told the media on the sidelines of an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Champs Elysées Foundation. He’s willing to call it a reward.”

“It is great that the BCCI rewards those who play the tournament but I also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder of the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, is also taken care of.

“(If) the cost of the Ranji Trophy can be doubled or tripled, definitely more people will participate in the Ranji Trophy, (and) the number of people who will withdraw from the Ranji Trophy will be a lot less because if they participate in the Ranji Trophy The competition fee is good, and fewer people will quit due to various reasons.

“They will all want to use the tablet system – for every 10 first-class games you get more, so I would ask the BCCI to look at that aspect as well.”

The legendary batsman welcomed the Indian Cricket Board’s recent emphasis on involving more first-line players in domestic cricket.

“It’s something that everyone knows. It’s something that every cricketer should be looking at – domestic cricket is actually what they are. If they don’t start at the domestic cricket level, whether it’s domestic T20, domestic One-day tournament or Ranji Trophy, they won’t be where they are,” Gavaskar said.

“There are very few cricketers who have not actually played domestic cricket, they have always played some domestic cricket, maybe youth cricket or U-19 cricket or something like that. That has to be the case for every cricketer Can’t forget it.”

Gavaskar also urged the BCCI to take a look at the Ranji Trophy schedule, which this year will be played over two months from January 5 to March 14.

What’s more, there is a three-day break between most games, which can be difficult for players to cope with.

India all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Tamil Nadu captain Sai Kishore also spoke about this and warned that if the schedule is not changed, players from various countries will start getting injured.

“That’s something that should be considered (revisiting the schedule) because you have to have a situation… where in the three-day gap, there might be a one-day gap in travel,” Gavaskar said.

“During the trip, there is no time to see the physio, maybe no time to recover with his help. So, probably there should be a little gap so that the players have enough time,” he added.

Gavaskar said the Ranji Trophy matches should be played from October to mid-December, followed by white-ball matches.

“This way, everyone can play except the players who are representing India. There will be no real excuse to withdraw. With the one-day tournament starting from January, those who are playing in the IPL can have enough from then on practise. “

Gavaskar also said that Test cricket will continue to exist.

“Test cricket is definitely coming. You may not have a five-Test series between every country, only two or three countries may have a five-Test series. Any tour now will be a Test series , a mix of T20Is and ODIs,” he said.
