‘Alfie Lewis’ stabbed in the heart in front of primary school pupils and parents, court hears

A 14-year-old teenager stabbed a teenager in the heart in front of primary school pupils and parents, a court has heard.

Prosecutor Craig Hassall Casey said he was on his way to meet friends when the defendant stabbed him with a 13cm kitchen knife.

Witnesses said Alfie looked “surprised and stunned” and asked the boy: “What are you doing?”, the trial was told.

“The defendant approached him and stabbed him twice – once in the chest and once in the leg,” Mr Hassall told Leeds Crown Court.

“He collapsed and died on the road near the primary school in front of many pupils leaving school and people waiting to pick them up.”

According to the post-mortem examination, the knife wound to Alfie’s chest was 14 cm (5.5 in) deep and had pierced his heart.

The court was told the defendant ran away and dropped the weapon on the road near St Margaret’s Primary School.

Mr Hassall said he believed the boy would claim he was acting in self-defence.

However, he told the court that all witnesses said that Alfie was not the aggressor and that he did not try to attack or threaten him.

Mr Hassall said a friend of the defendant – who had left the scene moments earlier – said he heard Alfie say “calm down” before he saw his friend stab Alfie twice Was.

The boy, who denies murder, was sitting next to his father when the hearing began on Monday. Due to his age he cannot be named for legal reasons.

‘Alfie saved the girl from the attacker’

The court also heard about two previous incidents between Alfie and the boy.

One is said to have occurred in July 2023, when Alfie intervened in a fight involving the defendant, and the other on Halloween, when Alfie said the defendant threw a firework at him.

In video evidence, a 15-year-old girl told the jury the fight was between her younger brother and the defendant.

She said the defendant had hit her in the face, but Alfie pushed her away and said: “Why are you hitting a girl?”

He fell, but the court heard Alfie helped him up and they shook hands.

The same girl also stated that Alfie had told her that he had stolen the defendant’s fireworks on Halloween, as he had allegedly thrown lit fireworks at her.

The girl said that when she heard he had been stabbed a week later on November 7, she ran to Alfie and begged him: “Don’t die on me. Please get up.”

The lawsuit is ongoing.
