Ahmedabad Metro to connect Gift City to Gandhinagar by June 2024

Every mode of public transport system is important and India is undertaking such infrastructure development with the objective of providing smooth routes to commuters, enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable mobility.

In this major development project of transport infrastructure, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is gearing up to expand its reach by connecting Gift City to Gandhinagar. With the metro completed in June 2024, the expansion will hold great promise for improving accessibility and connectivity in the region.

Speaking to Businessline, Pushkar Singla, chief general manager (corporate planning) of GMRC, said: “We will conduct a trial run of over 20 kilometers of priority coverage in the second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro in April and will include Motera. The Rendra Modi Stadium is connected to GIFT City and Sector 1 of Gandhinagar City.”

“If we get the necessary permissions, commercial metro rail operations to GIFT City and Gandhinagar will start from June,” said Singla, who is also the chief PRO of the project.

Notably, GIFT City and Gandhinagar in the second phase of the project will be connected to the Ahmedabad metro network, benefiting the 20,000 employees of the fintech hub. The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility and enable seamless travel between major economic and administrative centres.

Touted as India’s first international financial services centre, Gift City will soon be directly connected to the state capital Gandhinagar. This not only assists daily commuters but also enhances the economic vitality of the areas involved.

The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion, shorten travel times and provide residents, workers and visitors with a more efficient means of transportation. The project aims to modernize and integrate the metro network, in line with the larger concept of sustainable urban development.

As construction work progresses, stakeholders are hopeful that the project will have a positive impact on the overall socio-economic landscape of the region. The ongoing development of the Ahmedabad Metro demonstrates Gujarat’s commitment to promoting growth, connectivity and accessibility, showcasing the forward-thinking and progressive nature of the state.

The first phase of the Ahmedabad Metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2022, and some sections are yet to be completed. This includes the 1.4-km stretch between Thaltej and Thaltej Gam on the East-West Corridor. The project is expected to be completed in March 2024.

Additionally, Sabarmati Metro station continues to be out of service. The station is part of the intermodal hub being built under the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project.
