Congress seeks security for Manipur candidate Bimal Akkojam after 'threat'

Manipur Congress has asked the state chief electoral officer and police chief to provide security cover to the party’s Manipur candidate Dr Angomcha Bimal Akkojam after five or six unidentified People came to his Imphal home and left threatening messages to his family.

In a letter signed by Manipur Congress president K Megachandra, the party said that on Wednesday, when Dr Akoijam was not at home, unidentified people arrived and issued an ultimatum to his family to send him to a certain location. Attend the Friday 8pm meeting. yes.

In two letters sent to Police Commissioner Rajiv Singh, the state Congress president said: “On or about May 6, the above-mentioned unidentified person came to the house of our candidate again after a gap of about an hour and repeatedly asked Family members do not violate their orders,” and Manipur Chief Electoral Officer Pradeep Kumar Jha.

Dr Akojam, a professor at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), is contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the first time. Manipur has only two Lok Sabha seats – Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur.

In the letter, the State Congress Chairman said that although the authorities were informed of the threat to his life, no security was provided to him.

“In this case, had your good offices not taken the necessary action at the earliest opportunity to provide adequate security personnel, unfortunate incidents may have occurred which may not have been compensated monetarily as he (Dr Akoijam) had legitimate fears for the risk to his life ,” Mr. Megachandra said, adding that such threats did not ensure free and fair elections.

The Congress immediately sought Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to provide security to its candidates.

Dr. Akojam has a long history of involvement in public issues and democratic movements. He had been expressing concern about growing ethnic tensions in the border state long before violence broke out between the Kuki-Zo tribe and the Meiteis in May 2023.

The Jinan University professor decided to enter politics after a lifetime of teaching. He holds a master’s degree in psychology and a Ph.D.

Manipur polls will be held in two phases, inner Manipur will go to polls on April 19 and some assembly segments of outer Manipur will also go to polls. The remaining parts of Outer Manipur will go to polls on April 26. The vote counting date is June 4th.
