Three Indian youths, including a woman from Phagwara, Punjab, drowned in Phillip Island, Victoria, near Melbourne, Australia. Local reports quoted an official as saying that the four were swimming in an unpolluted area near the Forest Caves.

“Heartbreaking tragedy in Australia: 4 Indians lose their lives in drowning off Phillip Island, Victoria. Deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The @cgimelbourne team is in touch with friends of the deceased for all necessary assistance,” the Indian High Commission in Australia posted on Twitter (formerly Twitter).

According to Punjab News ExpressThe deceased woman has been identified as Reema, who is said to be the daughter-in-law of Phagwara industrialist Om Sondhi.

The report quoted Om’s elder brother, former councilor Vijay Sondhi, as saying that ever since he received the information about Reema’s death, he is shocked and saddened.

She further said that Reema along with her husband Sanjeev and his brother had gone to Australia for a holiday. Reema’s sister Suhani (22), resident of Solan, Himachal Pradesh, and a brother also drowned in the accident. However, the local police saved Sanjeev.

Emergency services responded to reports of four people struggling in the water at Newhaven Beach around 3:30pm (Australian time) on Wednesday, the report said. Police said three women and one man were pulled from the water without any reaction.

In the report, quoting the police, it has been said that it seems to be a group of about 10 people. Victoria’s Phillip Island tourism body said the caves, where the incident occurred, were formed by rock erosion and are only accessible at low tide.
