Canberra/New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) Indian Army sailing ship IASV Triveni arrived in Fremantle on Monday for her maiden foreign port visit on the historic tri-services women’s circumnavigation expedition ‘Samudra Pradakshina’. An officer gave this information.
Consul General of India to Western Australia Kajri Biswas, Defense Advisor in Canberra Captain (IN) Rohit Raymond and consular officials welcomed the crew, the official said in a statement.
The arrival is a significant milestone in the nine-month journey, which was flagged off by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on September 11 from the Gateway of India, Mumbai.
On arrival at Fremantle the team engaged in rigging and maintenance inspections, safety checks, engagement with the local defense and sailing communities and the Indian diaspora.
A lecture on ‘Women in Sea Voyages’ is also scheduled for schools and institutions. The yacht is scheduled to visit New Zealand on November 8, the statement said.
‘Samudra Pradakshina’ is the world’s first tri-service all-women circumnavigation expedition. Nine women officers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are sailing the eastern route on the indigenously built 50-foot IASV Triveni, which will cover a distance of approximately 26,000 nautical miles, cross the Equator twice and round the three Great Capes (Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope).
The statement said the mission has both a strong operational and diplomatic mandate to demonstrate the leadership of women in uniform and strengthen maritime ties with partner nations.
It said, “Operation ‘Samudra Pradakshina’ is a shining symbol of women power, tri-service jointness and maritime vision of India. The courage, skill and resilience of these officers reflects the best of our armed forces.”
