No arrests have been made so far in the case of the alleged acid attack on a 20-year-old woman near Delhi University’s Lakshmi Bai College, police said on Monday (October 27), even as a new twist emerged as the location of the prime suspect was far from the crime scene.

On Sunday (October 26) morning, a second-year B.Com student enrolled in DU’s Board of Non-Collegiate Women’s Education was allegedly attacked with acid when she was on her way to attend an extra class.

Police said the main accused was Jitendra, who was accompanied by two more people, Ishaan and Armaan.

Jitendra, a resident of Mukundpur, where the victim also lives, has been detained for questioning, he said.

“We have interrogated Jitendra, who claimed that he was not present in the area at the time of the incident,” police said.

Prima facie, investigators also found that Jitendra was not in the area when the attack took place.

“As of now, his location at the time of the incident does not place him at the crime scene. Verification is being done from multiple angles.”

“His call detail records (CDR) show him in the Karol Bagh area and not at the crime scene,” an officer said.

Furthermore, although there were no CCTV cameras at the site of the alleged attack, the footage from around the area also does not prove Jitendra’s presence.

The police have also expressed suspicion over the woman getting down from the e-rickshaw 200 meters away from the college.

A source claimed that no traces of acid were found on the wall near the alleged crime scene.

Police said that both brothers Ishaan and Armaan are distant relatives of the victim. It has also come to light that there is a property dispute going on between the family of the victim and the brothers.

Police said that in 2018, a member of the victim’s family had thrown acid on a relative of the brothers. That matter is pending in the court.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Bhisham Singh in a statement explained what allegedly happened on Sunday.

The attackers threw acid on the woman from close range. He raised his hands to protect his face, due to which both his hands got burnt. All three ran away after the attack.

“The injured woman was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors provided initial treatment. Hospital authorities informed the police,” the statement said.

Initial inquiry revealed that Jitendra had been stalking the woman for several months.

About a month ago, they allegedly had a heated argument, following which the harassment allegedly escalated.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family said that her condition remains critical.

The woman’s brother said, “I got a call from my uncle, who told me that three people have attacked my sister with acid. One of them lives near our house and has been following her for some time. He confronted him last month and has been threatening her ever since.”

“We want justice. The attackers should be put behind bars,” he said.

Several local police officers, including Bhisham Singh, inspected the area for more clues.

The DCP said, “We are leaving no stone unturned to investigate the case properly. We have formed several teams which are searching for the accused.”
