The main accused in the violence that broke out in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani over the demolition of an “illegally” built madrasa was arrested on Sunday. Police officials said 30 people have been arrested so far in connection with the clashes.
Meanwhile, schools were allowed to reopen after the curfew imposed by the state was lifted.
Earlier, state government officials told CNN-News18 that the main accused, Abdul Malik, was arrested in Delhi and brought to Haldwani for interrogation.
Malik was arrested along with his son and three others namely Malik, Jisan Parvez, Javed Siddiqui, Mehboob Alam and Arshad Ayub. They were accused of inciting riots, arson, damaging public property and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.
Javed Siddique, brother of the Socialist Party leader, was arrested after CCTV footage emerged proving his role in the riots.
