Jaguar Land Rover launched its own insurance offer last October in response to the problem after customer complaints. Since then it has provided over 37,500 insurance quotes.

Jaguar Land Rover is offering to cover insurance costs for its buyers in the United Kingdom who took home a Range Rover amid a rise in SUV theft.

Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc is offering to pay part of customers’ insurance costs for new Range Rovers after theft drove up premiums and left some unable to get cover.

The British carmaker will pay £150 ($187) a month for three years to cover new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models registered from May to September, it said on Wednesday. The offer, via its recently launched insurance service, excludes new Velor and Evoque models and vehicles worth more than £150,000.

It’s the latest attempt by JLR to woo customers put off by the rise in thefts of its luxury SUVs, which have made insurance premiums soar and in some cases difficult to cover. Range Rovers have been targeted by criminals, particularly in London, because of their cost and their keyless technology.

In response to the problem, the carmaker launched its own insurance offering last October after complaints from customers. Since then it has provided 37,500 insurance quotes, the company said Wednesday.

In February, JLR chief executive officer Adrian Mardell said the company would have to fund police security at ports to tackle the problem of cars being stolen and shipped overseas.

Since 2018, more than 150,000 vehicles have received safety updates from 2022, JLR said.

Patrick McGillycuddy, JLR’s UK managing director, said in a statement that the company is taking an “all-frontal” strategy to tackle the negative impact of organized crime on consumers, insurance premiums and the insurance industry.

Since January 2022, only 0.2% of new Range Rovers and new Range Rover Sports have been stolen, JLR said, citing police national computer data.
