EasyJet flight nearly crashed into Swiss lake, investigation finds

The cause of the near miss has not yet been specified.

An investigation has been ordered after an EasyJet flight landed under the glide path as it approached Geneva airport. The flight was en route from Edinburgh to Switzerland, Edinburgh News reported. The outlet further stated that an interim report by Swiss investigators stated that the plane descended to a dangerously low altitude and almost crashed into Lake Geneva. The plane, carrying 157 passengers, was just 750 feet above the water and still 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) from the runway.

The incident occurred in November last year, and the aircraft involved was an Airbus A320 Neo. The investigation report was released this week.

The Swiss Safety Investigation Board (SUST) said the plane should have been three times as high as it was descending.

“While approaching runway 22, the aircraft descended significantly below the glideslope and the crew initiated a go-around,” the Swiss Safety Investigation Service (SESE) said.

Air traffic controllers issued an alert to pilots, urging them to “check altitude immediately.” The pilot then accelerated rapidly and circled over the French commune of Tono-les-Bains. They were placed on leave following the incident but have since been reinstated, the Edinburgh News reported.

The report further stated that the cause of the near miss has not yet been specified and that a full report from Swiss authorities is still pending.

An easyJet spokesperson said: “We fully support an investigation in accordance with procedures. The safety of those on board was not compromised at any time. The safety and welfare of our passengers and crew is always easyJet’s top priority.”
