Farmers’ protest: Heavy security deployed on Delhi’s northern border, massive traffic jams

Security forces have been deployed in the national capital, especially on Delhi’s border with Uttar Pradesh, in view of the ongoing major farmers’ protest in Parliament.

There was severe traffic jam at the Delhi-Noida border area since morning.

Officials said on Thursday that traffic arrangements had been made based on the situation and commuters were advised to avoid certain roads.

“Strict security measures are in place at different border entry points in the national capital. No one is allowed to violate law and order,” said a senior police officer.

Paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain law and order, in addition to heavy security forces.

Pickets and roadblocks were set up at the border areas connecting Delhi-Haryana and Delhi-Uttar Pradesh, he added. According to Delhi Traffic Police, traffic congestion is expected on the route connecting Sonia Vihar, DND, Chila, Ghazipur, Sabhapur, Apsara and Loni borders on Thursday. Commuters are asked to avoid or plan their journeys accordingly.

Gautam Buddh Nagar police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of farmers’ protest demonstrations in Noida and Greater Noida. Police have also issued traffic warnings, reminding commuters not to take diversions on some routes in the twin cities in view of farmers traveling on tractors.

Farmer groups in Noida and Greater Noida have been protesting since December 2023, demanding higher compensation and development of land acquired by local development authorities in the past.
