A total of 88 candidates, including seven women, are in the fray for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, an official said on Thursday.

Six assembly seats in the state – Sidhi, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Mandla, Balaghat and Chhindwara – will go to polls in the first phase on April 19.

Ahead of the voting, Madhya Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Anupam Rajan told a press conference in the state capital Bhopal that voting would start at 7 am and continue till 6 pm.

“Six assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh will go to polls in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections tomorrow. These six Lok Sabha seats include a total of 47 assembly constituencies and 13 districts. Meanwhile, while giving information about home voting, Rajan said, “Home voting facility is available for voters above 85 years of age and more than 40 per cent persons with disabilities. In the first phase of LS polls, there were 5,466 voters above 85 years of age. And 2,881 voters with disabilities voted. Besides this, 536 essential service workers, including journalists, voted in the first phase.”

The Madhya Pradesh Lok Sabha elections will be held in four phases. The state will also hold polls on April 26, May 7 and May 13. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.

Madhya Pradesh has a total of 29 Lok Sabha constituencies, making it the sixth largest state in terms of parliamentary representation. Of these, 10 seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates while the remaining 19 seats are unreserved.
