8 passengers stranded on African island after being thrown off cruise ship

The eight remaining passengers are now trying to catch up to their ship.

Eight cruise ship passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island after their Norwegian cruise ship departed, new york post the report said. A couple from South Carolina said they were stranded on the Central African island of São Tomé with four other American and two Australian passengers after the captain allegedly refused to let them reboard.

The eight passengers left behind have now struggled for days to catch their ship.

“We have never experienced anything like this before,” said one abandoned passenger.

Notably, on March 27, passengers were unable to return to the ship in time, according to a statement from Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Eight guests traveling alone or on private tours missed the last supply ship back to the ship and therefore failed to adhere to the full embarkation time of 3 p.m. local time,” the statement said.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated widely via the ship’s intercom, daily communications, and information posted prior to departure from the ship.”

Trapped South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell said their trip to the island was running into problems when their tour guide failed to get them back to the ship on time Friday. However, when they arrived at the port, the ship was still anchored and the coast guard on the island assisted them in getting back to the ship by boat. However, the captain allegedly refused to allow them to re-enter the vessel and they were left on board without any belongings, money or vital medication.

The couple told CNN affiliate WPDE that the passengers spent 15 hours traveling across six countries trying to reboard the ship in The Gambia on Sunday.

The Campbells also said several members of the group are elderly, another is a paraplegic and one woman is pregnant. They said one member of the group had not taken his heart medication for five days and became ill.

Passengers are now heading to a port in Senegal, where the cruise ship is scheduled to dock on Tuesday.

“We looked into some type of van transport that could accommodate eight people, including the quadriplegic woman, to drive from here. We would have to cross a ferry to get into Senegal,” Jay Campbell told WPDE.

“We just found out from the gentleman that the ferry wasn’t working, but he said, ‘It’s okay if the ferry isn’t working, we’ll get another boat and pick up a car on the other side. And then once we get to Senegal On the other side, it’s another four hours’ drive,” he added.
