8 Mumbai railway stations to be renamed: See full list

Mumbai:

The Maharashtra government will rename eight Mumbai railway stations with British-era names. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday.

The eight railway stations in Mumbai that will be renamed are:

  1. The Mumbai center will be named after philanthropist Jagannath Shankar Seth.
  2. Curry Road will be renamed Lalbagh.
  3. Sandhurst Road will become Dongri Road.
  4. The Marine Corps will be named Mumba Devi.
  5. Chanilu became Girgaon.
  6. The cotton green color is called Black Chowki.
  7. Kings Circle may soon be called Tirthankara Parshvanath.
  8. Dockyard Road will be renamed Mazgaon.

Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale has announced that the Maharashtra government has approved his proposal to rename eight railway stations in Mumbai. The MP representing South Central Mumbai constituency said the proposal will now be sent to the Center for approval.

Historian Bharat Gothoskar points out that not all proposed railway stations have colonial origins. The name of one of the stations comes from the Marathi word meaning “pasture”. He revealed that some stations, such as Charney Road and Ocean Line, had local significance and was opposed to name changes despite public demands.

In another recent development, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the purchase of 2.5 acres of land in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a move by the Maharashtra government. Secondly, Ahmednagar district will be renamed as Ahilya Nagar. The Cabinet also approved the construction of sea link between Uttam (Bhayander) and Virar (Palghar).
