A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Papua New Guinea early Monday, but there was no threat of a tsunami, US seismologists said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 0656 local time (2056 GMT) and was centered about 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of Kim Bei, New Britain Island, at a depth of 64 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that “there is no tsunami threat.” There were no immediate reports of damage locally.
Last month, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the area, killing at least five people and destroying an estimated 1,000 homes.
