A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck early Thursday about 65 kilometers southeast of the town of Kimbe in Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The USGS said the quake, which had a depth of about 50 kilometers (31 miles), struck at around 1:13 a.m. (1513 GMT on Wednesday) outside Kim Bei in the West New Britain region.
