The Associated Press reported on Friday that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck off the western coast of the Peloponnese Peninsula in southern Greece.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which was also felt in the Greek capital Athens and as far south as Crete.
The quake, which struck on Friday morning, was centered under the sea near the Strofades Islands, about 120 kilometers southwest of the western city of Patras, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.
Greece is located in a highly seismically active area, and earthquakes are common. The vast majority cause no harm and almost no damage at all.
