5.5 magnitude earthquake shakes New York City, New Jersey, USA

New York:

A small 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck New York City on Friday, with the epicenter in neighboring New Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

There were no initial reports of injuries or damage.

Buildings in Brooklyn shook and cabinet doors and fixtures rattled, AFP reporters reported.

Meetings of the New York-based United Nations Security Council on the situation in Gaza were suspended following the earthquake.

“Is this an earthquake?” said Janti Soeripto, a Save the Children representative who spoke at the time.

Social media users reported feeling the quake from Philadelphia to New York and east along Long Island.

The iconic Empire State Building reported on its X account: “I’m fine.”
