An Indian-American man died days later after being found with life-threatening injuries following a fight outside a Washington restaurant earlier this week.
Police reports say Vivek Taneja, of Virginia, was at two Sisters Japanese restaurants with the suspect on February 2. He was “knocked to the ground by the suspect and his head hit the pavement,” the Washington Post reported, citing a police report.
Against this backdrop, a series of attacks and deaths against Indians and Indian-Americans have occurred in the United States.
Police reports said Taneja, 41, left the restaurant about 2 a.m. and a fight broke out in a nearby street, but did not describe the nature of the altercation. He lost consciousness during the attack and when police arrived they found him with life-threatening injuries and took him to hospital.
He died of his injuries at a hospital on Wednesday, police said.
A search is underway for the suspect who was seen on CCTV. He has not yet been identified.
Police are offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Earlier this week, an Indian student was attacked by robbers in Chicago and was left bleeding from the nose and mouth. Syed Mazahir Ali, whose family lives in Hyderabad, was seen on video pleading for help after the attack.
Four other students of Indian origin have reportedly died in the United States this year.
Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a 19-year-old student who held a U.S. passport, was found dead last week, but authorities ruled out foul play. Earlier this week, another student, Neel Acharya, was found dead on Purdue University’s campus, hours after his mother reported him missing.
On January 16, Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old student from Haryana, was beaten to death by a homeless man in Lithonia, Georgia. Another Indian student, Akul Dhawan, was found dead outside the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in January.
