3 people from Kanpur drown while bathing in Sayu river in Ayodhya: Police

Three friends from Kanpur, including a minor, drowned in the Sayu river while taking a bath before visiting the new Ram temple on Sunday morning, police said.

They were identified as Ravi Mishra (20), Priyanshu Singh (16) and Harshit Awasthi (18). The victim had come to Ayodhya from Kanpur to visit the temple.

They drowned while swimming in the river. Locals rescued the three people from the water and took them to hospital, but doctors declared them dead, city deputy commissioner of police Madhuvan Kumar Singh said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident.

Instead of going to the normal bathing ghat, the victim went to the river bank next to the crematorium near Ramkarta Park, the official said.
